We were recommended to stay at Smeralda by a Colombo-based friend. This property was recently renovated so everything looks new and well maintained. It is run by an Italian ex-luxury hoteleir and you can see he brings some of his previous experience into Smeralda. There are 8 rooms all ocean facing, a beach side pool with direct access to a clean sandy beach, and a restaurant serving not just any Italian food, but the absolute BEST you'll have anywhere in Sri Lanka. We celebrated my wife's birthday and they proactively decorated the room and reserved dinner on the night of. The staff is very friendly and well-trained. The rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished. The shower water pressure is just fine. Iana, the manager, took very good care of us and Andre, the owner, was generous and sociable. Location wise, you are 10-15 minutes by tuktuk to Hirikiteya beach (busy) and about an hour from Weligama/Mirissa. We will definitely be back.
