Borgarnes is a medium-sized town in West Iceland. During our stay, we encountered bad weather and therefore did not explore the town much. However, from our research, we didn't find too many points of interest to visit in the city. We would recommend a visit to Borgarnes purely as an overnight halt location (which was our primary purpose).
A comfortable place near the waterfall; perfect starting point for walking up the Warm Brook mountain just in front of the hotel (with a wonderful view on West Iceland). The food served for dinner could be improved (please avoid the fake balsamic vinegar syrup all over the plate!).
Great location to explore West Iceland. Not a lot to do in Borgarnes itself but there is the Settlement Centre and it's close to plenty hotels and attractions.
A very small town but people were so friendly. A local saw that I was lost and ended up dropping me off at my hostel. The location is a nice gateway/stop point to see western Iceland. A few hours or one day should suffice as there are not that many attractions or shops in this town. Although I took a local blue bus to arrive if you haven't rented a car it may be best to do a tour of west Iceland with the bus company stopping at borganes... As I said before it's a small town and very quite.
Búðardalur
The rooms are nicely decorated, clean and all come with a fridge, kettle and coffee maker. Most of the rooms have a direct view of the ocean, which is perfect to watch birds or the northern lights. The shared bathrooms and kitchen were also clean and well equipped. Caro the owner was incredibly friendly, took me on a historical tour around the town, to their horses and gave me great recommendations to explore West Iceland. If you’re looking for a place to stay to explore west Iceland this is 100% it!!
We can't love this hotel anymore than our initial expectations! The food is absolutely amazing, world-class food! The views of the fjords are breathtaking! The spa tubs and sauna are a really nice extra luxury that comes with your room fee. The location is great for exploring West Iceland. The best part was see saw the Northern Lights, not one night but both nights of our stay. It was pure magic, and we would definitely stay there again!
Lysudalur
The location and room were great and the staff were lovely and friendly. We weren't able to spend as many nights here as we had hoped because the roads were closed to the weather. The owners were very helpful and understanding and made what could have been a stressful change of plans super straightforward and stress free. Would definitely stay here again next time I'm in West Iceland!
I liked it because it was like my home. The senior couple who welcomed us were so kind. The bed was firm and very comfortable Dinner was like home cooking and delicious. Breakfast was plenty. It was a very pleasant and restful stay. My husband even used their dry sauna, it was a nice treat for him. This is an excellent place to stay if you plan to explore West Iceland.
Grundarfjordur
A comfy design for a small cottage; everything you need from a coffee maker to hot shower. There are several cottages but you still have your privacy and peace. Wonderful view with the Kirkjufell mountain and perfect location for aurora watching. The owner Sebastian) - was so kind and came checking up on us. Perfect accomodation if you are staying in West Iceland.
Bjarkarholt
We love that the place is very clean and the beddings, fixtures and fittings are all on higher ends. I think it just got renovated as everything look new. The bathroom and shower was great, the floor is heated, the kitchen works perfectly, the bed was so comfortable. Its lovely to walk across to see the beach and just enjoy the quietness of west iceland.
Akranes
Very comfortable, nice bed, great couch for lounging, kitchen had good set of basic supplies. Bought food from the grocery store in town. Very sweet and friendly dog. Easy check-in instructions provided. Absolutely beautiful view in all directions. Saw a double rainbow right before midnight—amazing! Great launching point for driving around west Iceland.
The house is nice & cozy. It has a bit of an antique feel to it due to the furniture. The rooms are clean and tidy. It has a fully equipped kitchen where you can cook your meals. The bathroom is also very clean. The host is very nice and friendly. He explained about different things that we could do in West Iceland. The location is also good.
Stykkishólmur
Loved this property so much. Perfect for families with kids. It’s a great place to relax, unwind, and unplug. The cottage had no noise or light pollution, and we were able to see the aurora on our second night. It’s also located in a good area to be able to visit West Iceland’s best sights (with a car).
Bær
We’ll appointed, very clean, warm, lovely hot tub, comfy large bed. Ideally located for our west Iceland trip. We were greeted warmly owner who said we should help ourselves to tomatoes and cucumbers from the green house. Glad to be coming back for another 2 nights at the end of our trip.
Hellissandur
Hostel was very different, it had creative art work everywhere. Kitchen had all required equipment. Room was good. Toilet and Bathroom were clean. The Central Hall was very lively and we loved spending time in the hostel. Definitely will stay again if visiting West Iceland.
Húsafell
Definitely a special place to stay. The owner made us dinner and a classic icelandic breakfast which was incredible. The hot tub was lovely and the traditionally designed rooms made me feel like I went back in time. 100 % recommend if you are in West Iceland.
Our second trip to this property. Again, another excellent stay. Good location in West Iceland, close to hot springs and water falls. A reasonably short drive in from the KEF airport. Breakfast was filing and excellent. Solid dinner.
The rooms are a good size with a good shower and bathroom. The views are great from the rooms and a good place to see the aurora if the conditions are right. Good location to explore west and southern west iceland.
Staðarhús
Set next to a horse stable, this place is very picturesque! This place has breakfast included during summer months and is ideal for a night while visiting West Iceland. It definitely felt cozy!
Stykkishólmur
Fantastic Property and very well located to explore West Iceland. The advantage is the kitchenette and comfortable bed, although it’s a small place just for 2 people.
Lovely hotel hidden in the West Iceland countryside. We were upgraded to a junior suite which was a nice surprise. Meal at the restaurant was amazing
One of the best west Iceland place we have stayed in. Very nice people. Very nice private hot pot!! Very nice room.
great location for exploring west iceland. room was clean if spartan.
For us, this will remain the place and time where and when we saw the Northen Lights for the first time.. And what a spectacle it was! The hotel wake up alarm during the night and their alerts in the evening were paramount for this great experience. We were also lucky indeed to be there when a high intensity aurora took place. Many ingredients have to be combined :) Now, the hotel and staff. Staff is very nice. Thanks to Iulia at reception for helping us with advice and bookings. Also to Jakob in the restaurant for kindly explaining us the dishes. Hotel is well placed for many trips in the area and has an activity center on the premises. Also short or long hikes can be done. Being close to a glacier, apparently, chances for clear skies are higher. Rooms are large, same for bathrooms. Breakfast is good, food in restaurants is also very good and very expensive :)
