Hotel El Hayat is a fantastic property right in the center of Batna. It is very budget friendly and offers excellent value for money. My room was cozy and well heated (essential in Batna's cold winters), the staff were incredibly friendly (and spoke very good English as well—not common in Algeria!), and the breakfast was more than adequate. I also enjoyed the newly renovated bathroom in my room with its plentiful hot water (again, essential during Batna's winter). For the price offered, this was probably the best bargain of all hotels where I stayed during my 24 days in Algeria. As a plus, there are many restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. It is safe and walkable—even late at night. Why pay twice as much—or more—to stay at one of the fancier hotels in town, when there is excellent value at El Hayat?
