British Museum
As Great Britain’s Empire expanded, so did its cache of material treasures – many of which are on display in this world-class museum. Among its eight million exhibits, you'll find the stunning Elgin Marbles from Greece, the Benin Bronzes and the legendary Rosetta Stone. The Reading Room stands at its heart and is spectacular in size and scope.

No other museum can even be in the same category.
No other museum can even be in the same category. Everywhere I looked I was in awe. I even had a chance to hold a hand axe once used by Homo erectus some 400,000 years ago (I think his name was Fred).

Amazing museum, well organised and full of interesting stories. Plus it's free! (except for the temporary shows) I really recommend to stop by, pick up the map at the entry and just get lost in history!

Excellent place with something for everyone, but don't expect to see it all in a couple of hours. The collection is huge. Don't bother with the non- museum touted tours or 'mystery' tours. Not worth the money and you only get a sheet of paper and a pencil - then you're on your own. Better , especially if you have kiddies, to check if the museum run sessions are on, they are much better. The food here is a rip off.

Go for 3 hours at a time max. You will burn out before then. Do a quick Google search for what may be your interests. There is no way you could see the entire museum in a week even.

Sometimes I travel to London only to pay a visit to the British Museum. This is an amazing place, and you should be prepared to visit only parts of it at a time. Take the hall of enlightenment. That hall alone would be a very important museum by itself. So take 1 max 2 hours pick 1-2 rooms and spend your time there, do not try to cover everything. The museum has a free entry, you can come back another time and see some other parts as well.
Sadly, the special exhibitions, are IMHO usually not worth the price they are asking. It is probably unfair to compare it to everything else that is outside, but as a tourist visiting London, there is so much to explore in the museum, that you will not really miss all that much if you do not go to the special exhibitions.
The northern entrance is usually less crowded so you can get through the (frankly ridiculous) security checks faster.

OMG, it's massive and has things I've read about like the Elgin Marbles and Rosetta stone. Must see and then come back and see again. Special exhibits are good too. The restaurant was expensive and had a small range of items to eat.

bunk beds ok, huge hostel, nice in-house bar, near St Pancras/Eurostar, great neighbourhood: British Museum, Waitrose, Russell Sq. tube, great Fish & Chips at the Fryer's Delight and many other restaurants and shops
Simple, no frills hotel, yet everything you need! Very comfy beds, tea and coffee facilities in room. No keys or key card to lose as access is via keypad code. Free WiFi. Great location just off Tottenham Court Road, close to Soho, Oxford Street and 10/15 minute walk from Trafalgar Square. 2 minute walk from British Museum.
The staff are very friendly and treat guests as real people, not just a number like in other more well known hotel chains. Close to a number of tube stations and a few of the theatres.
The location is excellent for the British Museum. The closest Tube station is not too far. The room was kept very clean. It is a no-frills location that is very practical. There is a good grocery store not far away. There are interesting restaurants in the area, especially Turkish, Chinese, and Indian (which we liked). The staff were helpful.
The location was steps away from the British Museum with many interesting restaurants and shops nearby. The room was very clean. The shower pressure was excellent. The staff was exceptional, especially Robin. They all went above and beyond to make sure we had what we needed. The hotel restaurant had good food. The breakfast was outstanding. Wide variety of foods including hot food cooked to order.
The location near British Museum was perfect, and there were plenty of good restaurants nearby, and the breakfast was great. Finally, Euston station is five minutes away, very convenient for our next destination.
staff was excellent, extremely helpful and friendly. In fact, the nicest hotel staff I have ever encountered. Nice bar, restaurant, and tea room on site. Steps from the British Museum.
Very good location, near British Museum and Russell Square Park. Good public transportation. Rooms facing the garden are pleasant and quiet. Friendly and helpful staff. Good buffet breakfast.
Easy access to trains. Clean, cozy, and quintessential British. Wonderful staff and customer service. I would definitely stay here again. Park and British museum close by.
