The Sheiling B&B - NC 500, hotel in Portskerra

Facing the seafront, The Sheiling B&B is a 4-star bed and breakfast situated in Melvich which features a garden and shared lounge.

Outstanding hospitality offered by Rolf; nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We also had an evening meal there which was absolutely delicious with Rolf being a most attentive host. The B&B is two minutes drive from Melvich beach and whilst located off the main road, you can hear absolutely no road noise. Highly recommended in every respect!

We wanted to explore some of the beaches in North Scotland, Portskerra is pretty central and has a cracker of a beach on the doorstep. The area is a really good base for getting around the North, we headed out to John O'Groats for walks and have a boat trip as well as trying some of the local beer! Also headed in the opposite direction out to Tongue, got out for a great walk in the rain along another fantastic bit of beach. Portskerra itself is a small village at best, has a post office/shop, The Melvich Hotel with bar and restaurant and a little sandwich shop. Used all three facilities while I was there and everyone was really friendly. Nice walk around the loop of the village, was good to get the dog out to stretch his legs. Golf courses, castles and day trips to Orkney all on your doorstep. Great place to base yourself.

We were doing our own version of the North Coast 500, and the Melvich Hotel was ideally located for us to go on to John o' Groats and the Stacks of Duncansby. We phoned ahead to say we would be late, and the hotel staff were very helpful on the phone with our most likely ETA. They also said the kitchen would probably be closed when we got there - but when we got there they were still ready and waiting for us. I had some lovely venison, and my wife thoroughly enjoyed her cod. We had a couple of drinks (from a well stocked bar) in the residents' lounge before going to bed. Our room was clean and comfortable and we both slept well after a long day of driving and sightseeing. 2 'full Scottish' breakfasts set us up nicely for our final day. The hotel gave us everything we needed, was reasonably priced, and the staff were very helpful throughout - told us how long it would take us to get there, kept the kitchen open for us, advised us where best to get petrol on the Sunday - all very helpful to 2 'strangers'. I could only recommend them to anyone travelling east or west across the extreme north of Scotland.

Character filled old Scottish hotel with views overlooking stunning cliffs! Rooms have been updated, as have other parts of the hotel. Stayed in small double, clean and compact, would suggest that a clothes rail or some hangers were installed, as we had nowhere to hang wet clothing. We ate in both nights and the food and service were fantastic, try the freshly made pizza they are fabulous! Staff were friendly, engaging and very helpful at all times. Would definitely stay here again! 😊

Melvich Hotel is a lovely place to stay when you’re driving along the NC500 in Scotland. It is located close to a beautiful beach that can be reached easily by foot in 15min. The staff of the hotel is super friendly and attentive, the breakfast was great and also the hotel restaurant offers a large variety of yummy dishes (including gluten-free options!)! They also have a bar that offers a large selection of spirits (with obviously lots of whisky 😉).

At this hotel we had a large room with an equally large bathroom. The restaurant on-site does a great selection of Pizza, which were delicious and reasonably priced. Whilst the front of the hotel does not inspire there is a lovely garden overlooking the bay at the back. This was great to sit in and to enjoy the views whilst eating meals. The hotel is literally on the NC500 which made it ideally placed.

Being bikers, the hotel is on an ideal spot just off the main NC500 route. It's clean and well maintained and we loved the decor. The food is wonderful, especially the large fresh breakfast. The pizzas are amazing! The staff were friendly, and its location, about a 15-minute walk from a beautiful beach, means it's ideal to have a wander after dinner.....the sights are amazing.

Excellent hotel. The staff make this hotel shine -- nothing was too much trouble, and service was always with a smile. The restaurant food is exceptional; be sure to try the pizzas. Wide selection of drinks in the bar. Room was clean and comfortable. A gem of a find for the NC500, if a little expensive compared to our other stop offs.

The staff were so welcoming and friendly towards myself and my 7 other friends! We stayed for one night whilst doing the NC500 and it was by far the nicest stay on our roadtrip. The hotel itself was clean and cosy and the breakfast was also amazing, I would recommend to a friend and would stay at this hotel again!

We enjoyed an overnight stay here while driving the NC500. Very comfortable and clean room and excellent food - both dinner and breakfast - gluten-free being no problem. The outside of the hotel looks a little tired, but don't be put off - the team are warm, welcoming and helpful, and the inside is great!

The staff at the hotel were incredibly friendly and welcoming, the dinner was delicious (would recommend getting a pizza!) and it was lovely to go relax with one of their whiskies from the extensive selection in the residents lounge. The views from the room over the bay were also great.
