City Express by Marriott Tapachula, hotel in Tapachula

Located 11 miles from Izapa Archeological Zone, City Express by Marriott Tapachula offers 4-star accommodations in Tapachula and features a fitness center.

We arrived 30 minutes before check-in. The front desk gal, Paola, was so incredibly rude with us, telling us we needed to wait for one more hour. Well, we had a late lunch and came back two hours later. Then we were rudely told we would have to wait one or two more hours and that if we left the hotel, it might be 4 or more hours. We sat on a dirty, filthy couch in the lobby waiting without air conditioning. The manager came over and told us to continue waiting for our room. There was no courtesy extended, no apologies, no discount, no bottle of water. We were met with rudeness and disrespect. The hotel allows smoking inside. All the hallways reeked of cigarette smoke. Our room was so heavily perfumed to disguise the cigarette smoke, it gave us an instant headache. Breakfast was marginal. Never again for me or my girlfriend. This hotel is a little run down, have stayed in hundreds of hotels, I give it 2 stars or less. The overwhelming disrespect and rudeness was barely tolerable.

Tapachula is a good overnight point for crossing the border...

Tapachula is a good overnight point for crossing the border with Guatemala at either Ciudad Hidalgo /Tecún Umán or Talisman /El Carmen. You can stock up on your favorite things before going to Guatemala where availability is scarce or imported goods cost a lot of money, but check first on import taxes or restrictions before buying stuff to take into Guatemala. There are a lot of supermarkets, Home Depot, Auto Zone, Walmart, Starbucks, lots of restaurants of all types and for all budgets. Downtown is lively, but traffic can be bad, airport outside of town has flies to many locations in Mexico.

Tapachula is nice for me doing migrant work. There are some great restaurants. People are exceptionally friendly. But the city is hot and crowded. I wouldn't recommend for the average tourist.

Unfortunately due to the Corona virus I mostly stayed in the room and in the hotel, apart from buying food and a new blouse. All local cultural sights were closed but the shops were open and lots of people were out and about. Very few wore masks unlike in Antigua which was almost a ghost town when we left. I’d just travelled from Guatemala on a chicken bus and was very tired so can’t comment much on the town. The hotel was so helpful and friendly though, the staff sang as they worked!

I like Tapachula very much, but don't think this is a place...

I like Tapachula very much, but don't think this is a place for novice travelers. It's very hot and bustling. Extreme poverty is very evident, partly because of the tens of thousands of migrants stranded here. I think Tapachula has little to recommended it within the city limits, though there are interesting Maya ruins nearby and beaches about an hour away. I have found several great restaurants, though.

Tapachula is the entry point into Mexico for Central Americans and refugees from all over the world. There are some pretty and extremely interesting ruins outside of towns, and the beach is not too far. Ultimately, thought, I don't think Tapachula would be considered comfortable for most Americans.

Hotel is really modern with nice comfy bedrooms and hot showers. Facilities (including free washing machines and computers) are really great. The staff are also incredibly friendly and helpful (particularly Alejandra on the front desk!) The location is a bit of a tricky one - for us, just wanting a hot shower and a place to sleep, it was perfect opposite the mall, however it is out of town so not somewhere you could walk from to go exploring

All the facilities were very nice, very well arranged, in a perfect location near the river, in the center of the jungle. We enjoyed that everything they serve in the restaurant they produce by themselves and in general food was very delicious; hotel is very sustainable. Stuff is very very nice, especially our tour guide - Ivan.

The hotel is located around 8 minutes away from the OCC bus stop and around the same time to get to the centre by walk. Also there is an OXXO shop 4-5 minutes away. The room was very big and the bed clean. They also let us check in and out 1 hour after the regular time, which we highly appreciated.

The staff in this hotel is beyond amazing. The parking is secure and 247. The facilities are clean beds comfy enough. Not sure I could ask for more. You're not going to get any work done on their wifi but that’s more of an issue with this whole part of the country.
