Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip.
Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip. Absolutely worth the drive out to go and experience both places. Kumamoto Castle was also incredible, though going inside the castle was kind of a disappointment. The outside of the Castle is the highlight, and although there are some nice artifacts to look at inside, it is mainly a warm shoulder to shoulder cue of trying to get to the top, which itself is just smudge class and heat to rival a sauna.
The local foods are a must! Kumamoto ramen gives that extra kick you want when having tonkotsu ramen, and basashi (horse meat) sashimi is a unique must for those who don't live in Japan to experience.
Very easy to get around with a car, but with the tram system and the busses having English on the header (something we could with in Nagasaki) it looks like navigating public transport would be easier than most places for English speaking foreign visitors.

Kunamoto is a bit off the tourist route, but has a tidy and peaceful demeanour with a beautifully designed shopping mall in the middle of town. The castle is close by as well.
Just be aware that the onsen are grossly misleading. The normal price us JPY400-700, but this lot want to extort over JPY4000! Absolute rip off. Alternatively, they market themselves as "public" bath, but when the public turn up to give them money, the venue rewrites the dictionary buy defining "public" as "private" for accommodation guests only!

Kumamoto is a nice and much quieter city where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. The main attractions are mostly located outside the city central, such as Mount Aso.
You can travel around the city using some new and retro trams, or public buses.

Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible castles and amazing gardens surrounding ancient temples (Suizenji Jujoen), to the three year old and stunning Sakuramachi Kumamoto building with green areas on every balcony and rooftop, to the fabulous nightlife and shopping around Shimotori, Kamitori, Nishiginzatori and Sunroad Shishigai Streets. My absolute favourite part of the city (have been coming for decades since I was a high school exchange student…), my first time at Candeo Hotel Kumamoto, but I will definitely be returning! So easy to get around, everything within walking distance (and all undercover or with underground walkway areas for when it’s raining), so safe, beautifully clean, and public transport is simple too.
Super good hotel with super good value. The hotel’s location is very good. It is closed to shopping street, Kumamoto castle and the parking opposite to that. The room and things are new and modern. Staff is very helpful and speak english very well. I surprise with the cheap price we got even on weekend. We will stay here again or find any hotel that belong to this brand hotel. Strongly recommend hotel to stay in Kumamoto.
The most amazing is the view of Kumamoto castle and the bathroom stuffs.
Very close to train station. (Exit out into the large open plaza and turn the corner to the right. You'll see the hotel ahead to the left.)
Use the street car directly across the plaza in front of the train station to get to Kumamoto Castle.
The room is small but clean and comfortable. The included breakfast buffet was Asian style and adequate. Other options exist at the train station.
Overall, a typical, reasonably priced stay, convenient to transportation.
1. Love the convenience; just a 2 min walk from Kumamoto Station!
2. Lots of eateries and shops within the mall that is below the hotel. More convenience/souvenir shops next door at the station too.
3. The tram stop to town and Kumamoto Castle is just outside the hotel!
4. Breakfast spread was good and the Blossom Terrace had a view of the park and cherry blossoms!
5. Great onsen too!
we would definitely come by and stay again!
We were staying in a twin room with massage chair. The value for early booking was excellent. The hotel has a car parking facility but because we rented a taller car, it was already full. Still, There is a lot of alternative parking options near by.
The hotel is walking distance to Kumamoto Castle. The main shopping area of Kumamoto and the Roofed Shimotori Shopping Street. So great great location.
The hotel is walking distance to Kumamoto Castle, which was a major selling point for us. It’s an easy tram ride from Kumamoto station. We had a King double - the bed was big and comfy, we had ample space for our luggage, and we could see the castle out our little window. You can choose between Japanese and Western breakfast set menu - we had one of each and bother were decent and filling!
This window doesn’t accept Japanese input methods of iPhone. So I write in English.
When you open window in room, all view of Kumamoto castle comes directly to your eyes, there’s no obstacles between castle and hotel. The view is beautiful in morning and in the evening, too.
In addition, the hotel is located at east side of the castle. You can see east side face of Kumamoto castle.
The location is great, it's very easy to get there from Aso Airport or Kumamoto Station, we could see Kumamoto Castle from the room. The traditional breakfast buffet was delicious and the receptionists were so kind, patient and helpful when we asked about shipping our luggage to a different city so we didn’t have to carry it with us while riding the busy trains.
- Unarguably location of the hotel which offers Castle view
- Shopping streets + tons of restaurants at the back of the hotel
- Parking 1,000 JPY/Night; can park until 11:30AM while check out time is 10:00AM. Parking is automated, but there are staffs waiting to assist
- fast check-in
- Friendly staff
- room is larger than average room in Japan
Customer service was exceptional with great English. I called the reception desk before check-in and they helped me find parking nearby. They work with 3 parking lots nearby and offer a discounted price. Location was perfect for a short trip with Kumamoto Castle and big shopping mall nearby. Breakfast was great too.
Relatively affordable hotel in a great location, the rooms seem brand new and very clean. Staff was very nice, and I was put into a room with a castle view. The rooftop terrace is also very nice. Room feels larger than it is.
Best hotel experience I've ever had. Staff there especially Ms Yamada (Ms 山田) was extremely helpful and smart. Excellent English. If we visit Kumamoto again, no doubts I'll stay at Hotel Nikko again.
