Caye Caulker does not have a beachfront, there is a barrier wall around all the areas. The water is beautiful and we went to Iguana Reef Inn to enjoy a little beach. The roads here are not paved, they are sand or clay and there are a lot of potholes. Your shoes and feet will not stay clean. The major mode of transportation is bicycle or golf cart. The island was not what I expected, we started our vacation in Hopkins which we loved. Check out Coconut Row if you want fabulous service, lazing by a glorious pool and enjoying beach front. The food on Caye Caulker was good but repetitive, most places serve the same stuff. We ended up going to San Pedro one day and renting a golf cart out to Secret Beach, that was really nice. The beach is free and there are restaurants and bars that come to your seats to take your orders and serve you drinks and food. We snorkeled with Nauti Time which is right next to the water taxi. It was a great experience and we had a good time.
One of the smaller Belizean island, CC has its own charm and its own pace -- go slow but keep moving is the motto. Food is excellent, dive opportunities everywhere, terrific snorkeling. Ah, but the Sand Flies!! Ouch! Make sure you have plenty of reef safe insect repellent and stay off the sand in the early morning and late afternoon when they come to feast on your legs and ankles. And remove your shoes before going back inside so you don't bring the little critters with you. I was pretty okay, but my manpanion looked like he had chicken pox and he was pretty miserable. Take care....but go slow! Best lobster is to be found at Pelican Sunset on the west side of the island. Make a reservation in person around noon if you want a sunset table. Dinner is served all day, but you might want to avoid happy house as it's crazy crowded. The Art Cafe is great for brekkie and has a lot of vegan options as well as salads.Eat meat pies when you can find them. Use Marie's hot sauce, a locally produced product! Go to The Split and eat crab claws, lobster kabobs, and BBQ corn at Esther's roadside stand. Drink local beer. Also local rum is darned tasty.
Caye Caulker is great. Everyone we ran into was super friendly. I would not go there just for the beaches. There are only a few that are what one typically thinks of when they think of Caribbean beaches. The snorkeling was 100% worth the trip out there alone. The food we had was great -- ask your lodging, they can steer you to the right places (I would recommend Reina's, Errolyn's, Maggie's Sunset Grill, Ice and Beans). The owner of Ice and Beans remembers your order and name on the second day you stop by and is sooo nice. I would also recommend that you do not miss rooftop yoga at Namaste Cafe!. The Split can feel a little Cancun Spring Break 1990ish. But its easy to avoid. We rented bicycles at our cabanas and that made getting around the island so much easier! Highly recommend- fun and easier than a golf cart because the roads are a little bumpy.
We just returned from the most incredible vacation on a picturesque little island paradise. From start to finish, it exceeded all expectations thanks in large part due to its friendly inhabitants who made certain that every moment counted.
Caye Caulker is very welcoming and relaxing. The people are friendly and the food is very tasty. I ate the coconut curried shrimp dinner with rice n peas and barbecue chicken at Chef Kareem. Walking distance to the water is one of my favorite part of being in Caye Caulker. Anything you need is steps away and you can walk without the need of a golf cart anywhere. I didn’t get to go to the other side of the split because I didn’t have enough time, but I will definitely visit again.
It is a very relaxing island. We enjoyed riding around on the bikes provided by our hotel. Feed the tarpoons, look for the sea horses and watch the sting rays come to shore at 4 pm. The wild life is beautiful. You can snorkel, sail. It's just really a lovely island.
