Serene as the Swan
Sun-drenched and laidback, Perth is simply a joy to be in. However, the West Australian capital does have tourist attractions, such as the Colonial-era mint, important in the country’s gold industry. East is the WACA, a must-see for cricket fans, and the city is also mad for Aussie Rules football.
The city centre has the historic Government House and Supreme Court, both dwarfed by the ultra-modern skyscrapers a few streets behind. The best skyline view is from leafy King’s Park, near the War Memorial overlooking the Swan River below, named after its black swans. Across the river in Perth Zoo are more native animals including koalas, crocodiles and free-hopping kangaroos.
Boats to the zoo leave from the Barrack Street jetty by a sail-shaped bell tower. Other day trips from Perth include Rottnest Island and Fremantle, down the river in the opposite direction from Perth Airport.
The apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Perth are spread all over this fantastic city, interspersed with restaurants serving specialities such as western rock lobster and chilli mussels. There is also a wealth of bars, many playing the indie music that the city is known for. Local brews from the Swan Brewery and wines from the Swan Valley vineyards round off the evening.

Perth city and the historical buildings, close to Kings Park and the Swan River are unbeatable. The train system is excellent and you can reach Cottesloe and Fremantle easily. Perth offers fabulous cafés and restaurants and is an oasis of peace in this busy age. It is never too much trouble for friendly locals to chat or give advice.

I loved the train from the airport and being in the city...
I loved the train from the airport and being in the city centre it was easy walking around. I walked over the pedestrian bridge on the freeway and it took me up Mounts street and to Kings Park and caught the free city bus back. There was other attractions to see but I had come to go to a festival.

Perth is a beautiful city but avoid TAXI service and the Airport is dreadful and confusing, so make sure you understand the correct terminal as the two awful airlines are a 15 minute drive away from each other. A very quiet room and housekeeping were the same going about their morning which is refreshing given some of our other hotel stays in Perth. Parking does fill up quickly inside the gates but there is plenty of off street spots. The buffet breakfast is a worthwhile addition though it would be good to see fried eggs available, minor detail. Will definitely be staying again.

Coles is across the road. Two excellent laneway coffee shops worth trying. The sunset on the grassy hill in front of the hotel is a must. We booked a tour of Rottnest island, which picked us up at the hotel and dropped us back from Hillary’s dock. Highly recommend doing this trip for a Perth first timer.
